Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT
Fraunhofer UMSICHT actively shapes the energy and raw material turnaround. As a pioneer for technical innovations in the areas of energy, processes and products, we advance sustainable management in order to improve people’s quality of life and to promote the innovative capacity of the economy. As one of 67 institutes and independent facilities of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, we are networked worldwide and promote international cooperation. Fraunhofer is the largest organization for applied research in Europe.
Fraunhofer UMSICHT was founded in June 1990 as a non-profit technical-scientific institution. The institute complex at the Oberhausen location comprises five buildings with office space, computer center, library and a representative event room. Workshops and pilot plants (3,100 m²) as well as laboratories (1,400 m²) form the technical infrastructure. Fraunhofer UMSICHT is involved in the city’s and region’s structural change with new ideas, technology transfer, spin-offs and the formation of R&D networks.
Since July 2012, Fraunhofer UMSICHT has had an institute branch in Sulzbach-Rosenberg. In 2013, 528 employees belonged to the staff of both locations — mostly with education in the natural sciences and engineering. Of these, 308 form the permanent staff, in addition to 18 trainees as well as students, pupils and interns.
