Fraunhofer Insti­tute for Envir­on­ment­al, Safety, and Energy Tech­no­logy UMSICHT

Fraunhofer UMSICHT act­ively shapes the energy and raw mater­i­al turn­around. As a pion­eer for tech­nic­al innov­a­tions in the areas of energy, pro­cesses and products, we advance sus­tain­able man­age­ment in order to improve people’s qual­ity of life and to pro­mote the innov­at­ive capa­city of the eco­nomy. As one of 67 insti­tutes and inde­pend­ent facil­it­ies of the Fraunhofer-Gesell­schaft, we are net­worked world­wide and pro­mote inter­na­tion­al cooper­a­tion. Fraunhofer is the largest organ­iz­a­tion for applied research in Europe.

Fraunhofer UMSICHT was foun­ded in June 1990 as a non-profit tech­nic­al-sci­entif­ic insti­tu­tion. The insti­tute com­plex at the Ober­hausen loc­a­tion com­prises five build­ings with office space, com­puter cen­ter, lib­rary and a rep­res­ent­at­ive event room. Work­shops and pilot plants (3,100 m²) as well as labor­at­or­ies (1,400 m²) form the tech­nic­al infra­struc­ture. Fraunhofer UMSICHT is involved in the city’s and region’s struc­tur­al change with new ideas, tech­no­logy trans­fer, spin-offs and the form­a­tion of R&D networks.

Since July 2012, Fraunhofer UMSICHT has had an insti­tute branch in Sulzbach-Rosen­berg. In 2013, 528 employ­ees belonged to the staff of both loc­a­tions — mostly with edu­ca­tion in the nat­ur­al sci­ences and engin­eer­ing. Of these, 308 form the per­man­ent staff, in addi­tion to 18 train­ees as well as stu­dents, pupils and interns.
