TU Dresden — Insti­tute of Nat­ur­al Mater­i­als Tech­no­logy — Pro­fess­or­ship Paper Technology

The paper industry in Ger­many is No. 1 in Europe and, in a glob­al com­par­is­on, No. 4 behind the USA, China and Japan. With sales of around 14.4 bil­lion euros and an annu­al pro­duc­tion of 23.2 mil­lion tons (2010), a total of around 3,000 dif­fer­ent types of paper are pro­duced. The industry employs more than 41,000 people at around 165 pro­duc­tion sites in Germany.

The pro­fess­or­ship for paper tech­no­logy is one of two pro­fess­or­ships of the Insti­tute of Nat­ur­al Mater­i­als Tech­no­logy at TU Dresden. The Insti­tute cur­rently employs 35 people, 15 of whom work at the Chair of Paper Tech­no­logy, includ­ing the hold­er of the chair, Prof. H. Groß­mann. The sci­entif­ic pro­ject work is car­ried out by a total of 10 sci­entif­ic employ­ees and a secretary.

The cur­rent research pro­jects of the Chair of Paper Tech­no­logy are mainly focused on the fol­low­ing three main areas:

• Resource con­ser­va­tion (sav­ing energy and raw mater­i­als in stock pre­par­a­tion and paper production),
• Use of high-power ultrasound,
• Eval­u­ation and modi­fic­a­tion of sur­faces of graph­ic papers.
