There are three research subjects at the institute of organic chemistry:
DNA hybrid materials: Synthesis of artificial functional nucleosides with special redox properties or metal-coordinating sites for the construction of new nanoscopic materials and machines.
DNA damage and repair: Synthesis of DNA lesions and lesion analogues, incorporation into DNA strands and investigation of the structure (x‑ray, enzymatic digestion) and biological fate (repair experiments, mutagenicity) of the damaged oligonucleotides.
tRNA modifications: Total synthesis of natural modified RNA nucleosides, incorporation into RNA strands and investigation of the structure (x‑ray, enzymatic digestion) as well as biological function.
