Clari­ant is a lead­ing glob­al spe­cialty chem­ic­als com­pany headquartered in Mut­tenz near Basel. The Group is rep­res­en­ted world­wide by more than 100 Group com­pan­ies. At the end of 2011, the com­pany employed 22,149 people and gen­er­ated sales of around CHF 7.4 bil­lion. Clari­ant is organ­ized into elev­en busi­ness units: Addit­ives, Cata­lys­is & Energy, Emul­sions, Deter­gents & Inter­me­di­ates, Func­tion­al Mater­i­als, Indus­tri­al & Con­sumer Spe­cial­ties, Leath­er Ser­vices, Mas­ter­batches, Oil & Min­ing Ser­vices, Paper Spe­cial­ties, Pig­ments and Tex­tile Chemicals.

Clari­ant focuses on cre­at­ing value by invest­ing in prof­it­able and sus­tain­able growth. The cor­por­ate strategy is based on four pil­lars: improv­ing prof­it­ab­il­ity, innov­a­tion and research and devel­op­ment, dynam­ic growth in emer­ging mar­kets, and port­fo­lio optim­iz­a­tion through com­ple­ment­ary acquis­i­tions or divestments.

The Clari­ant Biotech & Renew­ables Cen­ter devel­ops solu­tions for biocata­lys­is and biore­finery. The innov­a­tion focus here is on the energy-effi­cient and resource-sav­ing devel­op­ment and pro­duc­tion of bio-based chem­ic­als and fuels. Clari­ant has developed a pro­cess that uses enzymat­ic hydro­lys­is fol­lowed by fer­ment­a­tion to pro­duce second-gen­er­a­tion bioeth­an­ol, so-called cel­lu­losic eth­an­ol, from wheat straw or oth­er agri­cul­tur­al residues.

Ger­many is the Group’s largest research and pro­duc­tion plat­form world­wide. A total of around 5,300 employ­ees work here for the Ger­man Clari­ant com­pan­ies, includ­ing Clari­ant Produkte (Deutsch­land) GmbH as the largest. Clari­ant man­u­fac­tures a wide range of chem­ic­al spe­cial­ties at 18 sites in Ger­many, com­pris­ing sev­er­al thou­sand indi­vidu­al products. They play a cru­cial role in cus­tom­ers’ man­u­fac­tur­ing and pro­cessing oper­a­tions or add value to their end products.
