Bioeconomy Inter­na­tion­al 2024

To sup­port the trans­ition from an eco­nomy based primar­ily on fossil raw mater­i­als to a sus­tain­able, bio-based eco­nomy based on nat­ur­al mater­i­al cycles, the BMBF is offer­ing inter­ested part­ners a new fund­ing oppor­tun­ity to apply.

In order to real­ise the bioeconomy as a sus­tain­able, bio-based eco­nomy, inter­na­tion­al ini­ti­at­ives with a wide range of ambi­tious activ­it­ies and pro­jects are required in addi­tion to nation­al and European ini­ti­at­ives. Since the bioeconomy must be con­sidered glob­ally, world­wide cooper­a­tion is required to real­ise the desired goals for estab­lish­ing the bioeconomy. This is where the Bioeconomy Inter­na­tion­al fund­ing pro­gramme comes in. Its pur­pose is to strengthen inter­na­tion­al cooper­a­tion and estab­lish sus­tain­able, act­ive part­ner­ships in the field of research, devel­op­ment and innov­a­tion by fund­ing research and devel­op­ment pro­jects in close cooper­a­tion with rel­ev­ant for­eign part­ners on key bioeconomy issues. This may involve pro­jects of vari­able geometry.

The inter­na­tion­al pro­ject out­lines sub­mit­ted for selec­ted pro­jects flank the BMB­F’s nation­al activ­it­ies to pro­mote the bioeconomy and make a com­ple­ment­ary con­tri­bu­tion to achiev­ing the fund­ing policy object­ives of the Nation­al Bioeconomy Strategy.

Uni­ver­sit­ies, non-uni­ver­sity research insti­tu­tions, state and fed­er­al insti­tu­tions with research tasks and com­mer­cial enter­prises, in par­tic­u­lar small and medi­um-sized enter­prises (SMEs), are eli­gible to apply.

The grants are awar­ded by way of pro­ject fund­ing as non-repay­able sub­sidies. The dur­a­tion of the pro­jects to be fun­ded is gen­er­ally up to three years. The amount of the grant per pro­ject depends on the require­ments of the pro­ject applied for with­in the frame­work of the avail­able budget funds, but may not exceed EUR 500,000 per association.

The fol­low­ing pro­ject-related expendit­ures or costs are eli­gible for fund­ing:

Per­son­nel;
Invest­ments neces­sary for the real­isa­tion of the pro­ject;
con­sum­ables;
busi­ness trips (only travel by the grant recip­i­ent);
Expenses for the regis­tra­tion of indus­tri­al prop­erty rights;
award­ing of contracts.
