Offi­cial launch of the European Sus­tain­able Bio­fuels Forum

The ESBF kick-off meet­ing was held in Brus­sels on Septem­ber 17^th and 18^th 2012 in which par­ti­cip­ated three European bio­fuels sec­tori­al asso­ci­ations, togeth­er with EU bio­fuels mar­ket oper­at­ors. The goal, pur­pose and mis­sion of this inform­al plat­form whose cre­ation was strongly sup­por­ted by the European Com­mis­sion Dir­ect­or­ate Gen­er­al for Energy were set dur­ing this meet­ing. ESBF will act as a single organ­isa­tion with the aim of gath­er­ing all the European bio­fuels sec­tors and pro­du­cers under one single umbrella in order to address com­mon issues and pro­mote the devel­op­ment of sus­tain­able and renew­able fuels in European trans­port. Earli­er in 2012, the European Bio­gas Asso­ci­ation (EBA), European Algae Bio­mass Asso­ci­ation (EABA) and the European Biod­ies­el Board (EBB) — along with tech­no­logy pro­viders, advanced bio­fuels pro­du­cers and sec­tori­al experts (Chem­tex, BDI BioEn­ergy, Idea-RE)- set the corner stone of the new ESBF for­um which aims at becom­ing a ref­er­ence for enhanced and har­mon­ised vis­ib­il­ity of the bio­fuels sec­tor in Europe and across the world. Under the shield of the European Com­mis­sion, the new ESBF plat­form was cre­ated with the declared aim to: 

• build up con­sensus among the EU bio­fuels stakeholders,
• cre­ate syn­er­gies between con­ven­tion­al and advanced gen­er­a­tions bio­fuels pro­du­cers and advanced tech­no­logy providers
• spread out extens­ive inform­a­tion on the state of play of European biofuels.

The inform­at­ive mis­sion of ESBF will focus on each rel­ev­ant area of the sec­tors ran­ging from mar­ket and tech­no­lo­gic­al insights, to trade pat­terns, and to more detailed reports on EU reg­u­la­tions at EU and nation­al levels. Fur­ther­more, ESBF intends to provide the EC Com­mis­sion with exhaust­ive inform­a­tion on tech­no­logy pro­gress, legis­la­tion and policy, and uses of new feed-stocks for bio­fuel pro­duc­tion. As such, the BIO­MAP pro­ject — out­lining innov­a­tions in Europe in an inform­at­ive and graph­ic­al man­ner — is an import­ant part of the ESBF as a valu­able ref­er­ence tool. Build­ing on an FP7 Pro­ject, BIO­MAP will devel­op fur­ther under­stand­ing of the state of play of bio­fuels by map­ping inform­a­tion across the bio­fuels value chains. The devel­op­ment is led by Map­ping­book using innov­at­ive graph­ic­al rep­res­ent­a­tions of com­plex issues. In its mis­sion to pro­mote bio­fuels, ESBF looks for­ward to involve a lar­ger num­ber of organ­isa­tions and com­pan­ies to par­ti­cip­ate in its Stake­hold­er Com­mit­tees and work­shops to be held in the forth­com­ing months.
