One of the largest green hydro­gen pro­jects in the world

Engin­eer­ing ser­vices pro­vider Thyssen­k­rupp Uhde Chlor­ine Engin­eers has been awar­ded a con­tract by Air Products for one of the world’s biggest green hydro­gen pro­duc­tion pro­jects in Neom in Saudi Ara­bia. Under the con­tract, Thyssen­k­rupp will design, pro­cure and man­u­fac­ture the plant based on its 20 MW alkaline water elec­tro­lys­is mod­ule. After com­mis­sion­ing, the pro­ject part­ners — Neom, ACWA Power and Air Products — will oper­ate the plant. The hydro­gen pro­duced will be syn­thes­ized into car­bon-neut­ral ammo­nia, which will be expor­ted exclus­ively by Air Products to the glob­al mar­ket. Design and pro­cure­ment work has already been ini­ti­ated, and com­mis­sion­ing is sched­uled for 2026.

In July 2020, Air Products, togeth­er with ACWA Power and Neom, announced the sign­ing of an agree­ment for a world-scale green hydro­gen-based ammo­nia pro­duc­tion plant powered by renew­able energy. Thyssen­k­rupp was selec­ted by its stra­tegic part­ner Air Products as a tech­no­logy sup­pli­er early in the pro­ject and has worked intens­ively on early engin­eer­ing and pro­ject devel­op­ment. In the pro­ject, Thyssen­k­rup­p’s large-scale tech­no­logy has a key role to play in help­ing Air Products devel­op green hydro­gen as an energy car­ri­er for sus­tain­able trans­port­a­tion, chem­ic­als and power generation.

With its large stand­ard mod­ule size and annu­al gigawatt cell pro­duc­tion capa­city, Thyssen­k­rupp, togeth­er with joint ven­ture part­ner De Nora, is already in a pos­i­tion to real­ize indus­tri­al-scale pro­jects, said Denis Krude, CEO of Thyssen­k­rupp Uhde Chlor­ine Engin­eers. With this mega pro­ject, the Group is sim­ul­tan­eously aim­ing to invest in the fur­ther expan­sion of our pro­duc­tion capacities.
