One of the largest green hydrogen projects in the world
14.12.2021
Engineering services provider Thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers has been awarded a contract by Air Products for one of the world’s biggest green hydrogen production projects in Neom in Saudi Arabia. Under the contract, Thyssenkrupp will design, procure and manufacture the plant based on its 20MW alkaline water electrolysis module. After commissioning, the project partners — Neom, ACWA Power and Air Products — will operate the plant. The hydrogen produced will be synthesized into carbon-neutral ammonia, which will be exported exclusively by Air Products to the global market. Design and procurement work has already been initiated, and commissioning is scheduled for 2026.
In July 2020, Air Products, together with ACWA Power and Neom, announced the signing of an agreement for a world-scale green hydrogen-based ammonia production plant powered by renewable energy. Thyssenkrupp was selected by its strategic partner Air Products as a technology supplier early in the project and has worked intensively on early engineering and project development. In the project, Thyssenkrupp’s large-scale technology has a key role to play in helping Air Products develop green hydrogen as an energy carrier for sustainable transportation, chemicals and power generation.
With its large standard module size and annual gigawatt cell production capacity, Thyssenkrupp, together with joint venture partner De Nora, is already in a position to realize industrial-scale projects, said Denis Krude, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers. With this mega project, the Group is simultaneously aiming to invest in the further expansion of our production capacities.
