BioCat Roslev ApS received a DKK 71 million grant to support hydrogen production
Biocat Roslev ApS, a company controlled by Electrochaea, officially signed a contract with the Danish Energy Agency, securing up to DKK 71 million (EUR 9,5 million) subsidy in support of hydrogen production. This funding will facilitate the development of Electrochaea´s groundbreaking initiative — the BioCat Roslev project.
According to the project the planned hydrogen generation will use the capacity of nearby wind turbines. Together with CO2 from biogas production at Rybjerg Biogas, this hydrogen will be converted into e‑methane using Electrochaea’s patented bio-methanation technology. The resulting e‑methane will be fed into the Danish gas grid, benefiting the decarbonization of gas consumers throughout Europe.
The e‑methane will be fully in compliance with the EU regulations for the production of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO).
Doris Hafenbradl, CTO and Managing Director at Electrochaea expressed her delight at achieving this milestone: “The signing of the DKK 71 million support agreement is an important step towards the realization of the Biocat Roslev project. The work on the project began in 2018 with support from both Denmark (EUDP program) and the European Innovation Council. Now the project is close to its completion, and we expect the production of hydrogen and e‑methane will start in 2026. Biocat Roslev ApS is grateful for the support from the Danish government.”
Jens Henry Christensen, CEO of Rybjerg Biogas, highlighted the impact on a circular economy: ´´With the subsidy, we are getting close to utilizing the biogenic CO2 from our biogas production that is being emitted today. In the future, it will be used to produce more green gas from the plant at Rybjerg Biogas. Thereby, it will also contribute to the circular economy embedded in all our activities at Rybjerg Biogas. The hydrogen subsidy will also benefit the wind production we plan to establish near the Biogas Plant. I want to thank both the Danish Energy Agency, the Municipality of Skive and all our neighbors who have supported the project and look forward to seeing both the wind farm, the biogas plant and the methanation plant work closely together in the years to come.´´
Mich Hein, CEO of Electrochaea emphasized the importance of using Electrochaea´s patented bio-methanation technology on a full commercial scale: “The subsidy is highly appreciated and needed to realize the project. The e‑methane from the project will contribute to the replacement of fossil fuels in European transport and industry to the benefit of the climate. We aim for the BioCat Roslev project to serve as a showcase for replication in Denmark, Europe, and North America. ´´
