Duration: 2008 - 2013
The present IBB network based originally on the cluster competition "BioIndustry 2021 - Development of new products and processes in Industrial Biotechnology" of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). At that time, the network was one of five winners of this competition and bore the name "Cluster IBP - Industrial processes with biogenic Building Blocks and Performance Proteins”. Prof. Haralabos Zorbas, back then project manager at BioM Biotech Cluster Development GmbH, had initiated and coordinated the Cluster IBP.
From today's perspective the “Cluster IBP” was the first sub-network in the current IBB network.
Based on the positive evaluation of the IBP strategy, the awarding of one of the prizes of the cluster competition "BioIndustry 2021" - in the amount of five million euros for the submission of R&D projects - took place in 2007. The first successful interim evaluation of the network took place in 2010 by the BMBF with external peer reviewers (and administrative support of the PTJ), whereupon the cluster has been requested to submit further project proposals under the coordination of the IBB Netzwerk GmbH (at that time BioM WB GmbH). Overall nine R&D projects were approved and funded within "BioIndustry 2021" by funds from the BMBF and the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology. The total project volume was 21.2 million euros, with a total funding rate of 48 percent.
