The network as well as the company came into being due to the nationwide cluster competition "BioIndustrie 2021 - Development of new products and processes in Industrial Biotechnology"of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). As one of the five winners, the network with the former name of "Cluster IBP - Industrial Processes with biogenic Building Blocks and Performance proteins" emerged from the competition. Prof. Zorbas, at this time project leader at BioM Biotech Cluster Development GmbH, had initiated and coordinated the cluster IBP.
In June 2008, both, the association "Verein zur Förderung der Weißen Biotechnologie in Bayern e.V." , and the company "BioM WB GmbH" as the management organization of the IBP network were founded. The association was and still is the sole shareholder of the GmbH.
BioM WB GmbH is the result of a strong and stable public-private partnership. Partners are the BMBF and the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology (BayStMWMET) from the public sector, as well as the globally operating chemical companies Clariant Produkte (Deutschland) GmbH (formerly Sued-Chemie AG) and Wacker Chemie AG from the industrial sector.
In October 2008, the five winners of the BMBF competition BioIndustrie 2021 established the working group working group "BioIndustrie 2021". The common objective is the sustainable support and visualization of Industrial Biotechnology on national and international level. Members of the working group are BIOCATALYSE2021, Biopolymere/Biowerkstoffe, CIB Frankfurt, CLIB2021 and we.
In April 2009, the BioM WB network was created on the basis of the IBP network to extend the activities beyond the original IBP concept to the entire Industrial Biotechnology. The network IBP became part of the BioM WB network.
After four years of successful growth and constant development BioM WB GmbH was renamed in Industrielle Biotechnologie Bayern Netzwerk GmbH (IBB Netzwerk GmbH) in October 2012. The association was also renamed and is now called "Förderverein Industrielle Biotechnologie Bayern e.V."
